Using a new Dell Axim

by Robin Tuck

Departing from Palm

I liked using my Palm Pilot, and upgraded several times. Unfortunatly, I began to have problems. It became more difficult to read the monochrome screen and I was not satisfied with the software I was able to write or the speed the Palm ran at.

After my third Palm died, causing me to lose considerable trust (as well as data), I looked long and hard at the Compaq Ipaq, but was put off by the high cost. When Dell entered the handheld market, I jumped at the chance to purchase one, placing my order from the Dell booth at the 2002 Comdex show. All has not been perfect with my order with Dell, but overall, I am happy with the machine.

I am just learning how to use the Microsoft Pocket PC 2002 operating system and am beginning to find useful programs to support my hobbies, mostly birding. As I find and adapt files and databases and whatall, I will post them here for others to take and use.

My first accomplishment was to build a theme for the 'Today' page. You may download the theme files by clicking the pictures below or by selecting the download links on the left. Use these themes by copying one to your 'Mobile Device' directory on your handheld. You may need to pick up the Theme Builder Powertoy from Microsoft to make this work, available here. I took the picture of Mount Timpanogos from a trail on Cascade Mountain myself, so there are no copyright problems. Tuula Rose, a member of the Utah County Birders took the picture of the Rufous Hummingbird, and has given me permission to share it. Margaret Sanchez took the picture of the Bald Eagle and gave me permission to use her pictures. These pictures may be used for personal purposes only and are not to be distributed through any other Web pages or collections.
