UOS Presentation

Utah has not done a breeding bird atlas (sometimes known as a breeding birding survey) as other states have, therefore we do not have a well understood baseline of our breeding bird populations.

It is proposed that Birders from the various Utah Birding Organizations produce a breeding bird survey of their home counties to meet these needs for their county and to serve as a model for breeding bird atlas' in the remaining Utah counties.

Breeding bird atlas', as they have been done in other states involve the following:

  • Divide the state (or area to be surveyed) into uniform squares.
  • Ask volunteers to take a square and determine what birds nest there.
  • Record the nesting birds found.
  • Publish a book documenting the information found.

An example of a successful state-wide breeding bird atlas is documented in "Birds of New Jersey".
